SIPs
are an obvious choice when compared to stick built.
Why?
The most obvious benefit is insulation value. A standard stick built wall has
approximately 25% wood framing in it. You lose a quarter of that wall’s
insulation value to framing and fasteners. A SIP wall however, loses only 3% of
it’s insulation value to fasteners, plates, and splines. Another major benefit
is air infiltration. SIP walls can reduce air infiltration by up to 90%. This
allows you to control the air quality in your home with an air filtration system
and reduces allergens, dust mites, and mold. SIP homes are also much stronger
than conventional stick built walls and SIP homes have been known to stand up to
earthquakes, tornados, and straight line winds.
Are
you looking to build a new home? Have you seen the advantages that a structural
insulated panel (SIP) wall system can provide? Do you want to save on heating
costs? Are you interested in having a stronger house? How about even possibly
saving on your taxes? Yes, SIPs can be beneficial in all these areas - they also
install faster saving you labor costs and are straighter.
Here
are just some of the benefits to owning a SIP house:
· Energy
Efficiency (up to 45%
more efficient than fiberglass insulated stud walls!)
· Reduces
Air Leakage (by up to
90% over fiberglass insulated stud walls!)
· Smaller
HVAC Equipment Required
(the amount of energy needed is cut by up to 50%)
· Indoor
Air Quality (With the
air leakage reduced a ventilation system is required which gives you control
over the quality of the air in your home with less allergens, mold and dust
mites.)
· Energy
Efficient Mortgages
(Some lenders will allow homeowners to “stretch” their debt limit when
purchasing an energy efficient home)
· Labor
Savings (with no walls
to assemble and predrilled wire chases labor savings can be up to 60%)
· Strength
(The structural characteristics of SIPs are similar to that of a steel I-Beam
with the OSB skins acting as the flanges and the foam as the web.)
